Air Conditioning ServiceTo save on future repair costs which you may incur, it is well-advised to have routine air conditioner service to keep the system running smoothly and maintenance costs at a minimum. Of the total overall energy costs in a typical home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, is estimated to consist of 56% spent on heating and cooling; that’s more than half. If you keep your unit well maintained you can keep those costs down as well as keeping energy consumption to a minimum which is good for the environment. The type of system you have, whether it be a window unit or a whole house air conditioning system, doesn’t make a difference when it comes to making sure you keep it well maintained for proper ventilation and airflow. You want your system to run at its maximum efficiency, with is true of all the typical things around your home that use energy; it just makes good sense. Most of the instances in which you will need air conditioner service should be handled by a professional, but there are some things you can do to cut down on your need for such service. As a precautionary step, make sure you turn off the power performing air conditioner service inside the ac unit. First take a look at the air filter; you should be replacing this every two months. If the climate in which you live is exceptionally warm, you’ll need to do this about once a month. Next, open the access to the blower compartment and get rid of any debris that might be in there; you can use a vacuum for this task. There will also be a drain tube that is coming from your unit and draining into a shallow pan. Pull this off and inspect it to make sure there are no clogs or any kind of damage. Check the drain plug that is on the unit, too. If there are any clogs or if it just needs a good cleaning, you can clean the tube in a solution of bleach and water by simply running it through the tube by pouring. If there is still debris present, you can glean it out gently with some tweezers. Now it’s time to go outside and check the ac unit in your yard. Again, before starting any air conditioner service, switch off the power for safety. Inspect it for debris, leaves or grass clippings that might be surrounding it; pay special attention to the fins for the condenser. You can remove any debris with a vacuum that has a brush attachment, or with a brush. Unscrew the upper fan unit and remove it by lifting it out of the way. You should not disconnect any of the wires and take precautions to make sure that they remain connected while you are working. After you have finished checking for and removing debris, replace the fan to reassemble the unit. You should have your system inspected at least once a year to make sure that everything is in tip top shape. If you want to make sure you’re not wasting too much money on heating and cooling costs, regular air conditioner service is required. |
