Furnace Repair

How to Save Yourself from Expensive Furnace Repair Bills

There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of an icy winter night and being able to see your breath. Unless you happen to have a back up heating source you are going to have to call in someone to repair the furnace that has obviously quit working. Very few people are capable of performing their own repairs so that means having to pay the high price that most companies charge for an afterhour's service call which can be quite costly.

There are things that you can do to prolong the life of your furnace as repair bills even during regular business hours can be quite expensive by the time you pay for parts and labor. You can do part of them yourself while the rest may require an annual visit by the repair technician to have your furnace inspected and serviced. The easiest and most often ignored thing that you can do is check your furnace's air filter once a month; if it is dirty you should replace it or if it is one that is reusable clean it out.

A dirty air filter can be responsible for many different types of furnace repair problems as it caused the system to have to work far harder than it was designed to. When your furnace blower motor cannot pull enough air in to pump throughout your house it makes it run hotter. This is turn overheats the bearings in the motor causing them to fail far earlier in their life than they were designed to. If you have one of the older belt drive fans it can also cause the belt to dry out and break causing failure. In both cases you are going to be without heat until you can get a repairman in to do the job.

Dust and dirt buildup are one of the biggest causes of furnace repair, like most appliances or machines a furnace needs to be kept clean to be kept running in optimum conditions. Dust and dirt can get trapped inside the electric motor that blows the heated air through the ductwork and warms your home. When the buildup gets to be too much it can cause your blower motor to overheat. If you are lucky it will simply trip a thermal overheat protection switch.

If your blower motor does not have this type of protective device, you can be looking at very expensive furnace repair bill as you may end up having to replace the motor. One more thing to think about regarding keeping your furnace clean is the possibility of fire if your blower motor overheats because it is full of dust and dirt.

The best way to avoid having to deal with any type of expensive furnace repair is to have a technician from Go Service All come to your home and perform an annual cleaning and safety inspection. This way if there are any problems, they can be detected early and may save you the cost of an afterhours service call when your furnace stops working.
